As the COVID-19 pandemic situation has continued to evolve, some jurisdictions are implementing “pandemic pay” for essential frontline workers. Despite their role in delivering health care to Canadians, resident doctors have not been included in the definition of “essential frontline workers”
In response, on May 15, 2020, the Canadian Medical Forum, a group comprised of leaders of Canada’s major national medical organizations (including Resident Doctors of Canada), released a Call to Action calling on provincial and territorial governments and all Ministries of Health that are providing pandemic pay, to:
“collectively acknowledge our most junior doctors who are working so hard in our hospitals, communities and long term care institutions, caring for patients, and:
Include resident doctors on the list of professionals eligible for pandemic pay at the frontlines of COVID-19 and in any future initiatives aimed at supporting essential frontline workers.”
