Patient handover, or the transfer of accountability for patient care, is a regular occurrence in medical settings across Canada. As front-line health providers, resident doctors are often responsible for patient handover.
RDoC has advocated for a formal handover curriculum as part of the accreditation standard for medical education. We believe the curriculum should reflect the core competencies of the CanMEDS framework. We also believe that the curriculum will be strengthened by acknowledgement that handover is a learned skill − trainees’ handover skills improve as they gain seniority.
